Head Injuries

It reported that veterans of N.F.L. combat are more likely than the rest of us to die from brain diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Not 50 percent more likely, or twice as likely, but three to four times more likely.

America’s ready for some football, but the human brain may never be.

Hey Ms. Johnson it’s Pierce Hili
    1. A concussion is when one’s head accelerates rapidly and the stops. A concussion is also when one’s head is spun rapidly. As a result from the violent shaking, the brain cells become depolarized and all their neurotransmitters are fired at the same time. This causes the brain to become flooded with chemicals that weaken certain receptors that deal with memory and learning. This definition of a concussion is different than the definition I am familiar with. I thought that a concussion was when you start to bleed internally in your head.
    2. Long term effects of these injuries are memory loss, trouble with speech, concentration issues, headaches, and other neurological problems. Brain damage may occur as well.
    3. These stories illustrate that things need to be done in our contact sports programs. There needs to be a certified athletic trainer. They can help prevent serious brain injuries. Football players and players in any other contact sport should not try to hide the fact that they have a concussion. They need to fully recover from a concussion before they should be allowed to even practice. Even a minor hit to someone with a concussion can cause even more severe damage.
    4. Even though football is dangerous to the players, I think we should still watch it. Regardless of the risks, there is always going to be people who play the sport. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the NFL, a school league, or just friends who are having fun, someone will always play it. Since there are professional leagues like the NFL, we might as well take advantage of it and watch. Besides, football has already had too much of a impact on Americans, so it will probably never die.
    5. Based on these two pieces, I will still let my child play contact sports. One reason is because I would have to trust him or her to speak up for themselves when they don’t feel healthy or fit enough to play. I would have to trust them to make the right decision. Another reason is because you can’t always think something bad is going to happen. There is always a chance that something bad could happen to you, but you can’t restrict your child from playing sports because of that.
    6. If I were to reform, hockey, lacrosse, football, and other contact sports, I would first encourage players to speak up if they get hurt. There is no shame in getting injured. It is bound to happen in contact sports and if you don’t speak up and play while hurt, you increase the risk of getting hurt even more. The quicker you stop playing and treat your injuries, the quicker you will be able to play again at your best. I would also try to limit the amount of contact the players have with one another. For example, I would try to get more people to play touch football instead of tackle. Tackle should only be played when you have the right gear, and even with the right gear, it is still dangerous.

  2. Michael Drobenko says:

Hey Ms. Johnson, it is Michael Drobenko.
    1. A concussion is a temporary unconsciousness caused by a blow to the head. I already knew what the definition of a concussion was.
    2. The long term effects of concussions are memory loss, trouble with speech, concentration issues, headaches, and nausea. Brain damage can and may occur.
    3. These stories illustrate that the head gear for our contact sports needs to be much safer.
    4. Even though footlball is so dangerous people are always going to watch it. Humans are not Superman. Everyone gets hurt so it does not really matter if we do not watch it or if we so watch it.
    5. Based on these two stories I would still let my children play contact sports. I myself play rugby, ultimate frisbee, and I also snowboard. These are all contact sports and you can get extremely injured from these sports. But it is really amazing how there are less injuries in rugby than there are in soccer and football. There no pads in rugby so it is kind of strange.
    6. I would not reform much. I would just try to make the helmets more safe.

    • M johnson says:

It is not just a violent blow but there are two other critical areas – the inability of the CFS to cushion the blow and the firing of brain celss – neurons all at once that can cause havoc on the individual

If people stopped watching these sports it would impact on the income of the sport and reform would occur

      Video was good – Thanks

  3. Derian Urena says:

    1. A concussion is a temporary blow to the head. When a person gets hit on the head with anything hard like a tackle or something falls on someones head. This definition differs from what I am familiar with because I thought it was internal bleeding.
    2. The long term affects of these injuries are confusion, blurred vision, and memory loss.
    3. The stories illustrate that what has to be done are safety procedures both for the person and the head. Why? Because football players should not try and hide their concussions because if they do, they are just hurting themselves more and preventing healing of the brain for long periods of time. Also, gear for the head should at least be tried to be upgraded to be more safer.
    4. Even though football is a dangerous sport, we should still be watching it . Because people are always going to look at it as entertainment until a guy gets knocked out, but after that occurs we still look at it as not a dangerous sport.
    5. Yes, I would let my children play contact sports because when they are young, safety gear will always be essential but once they reach 13 they will be alright because they know better and are mature enough to choose the right choices. Also, because I would not want them to stay home all day and do nothing but watch TV and play video games. But for my kid I will introduce him to baseball.
    6. I would not reform either sports because the way they are being played is good. All I would reform is better gear and less rough housing. For both the safety of the players and body.

Make sure you understand it is the impact or force of the flow and the inability of the CFS to absorb the shock as well as the brain’s cell’s firing of neurotransmitters that are also involved
Video was informative and perhaps all students should be made aware of this
13 yrs old l is a bit young for a child to decide if he or she is ok – remember it may not hurt immediately and the young are much more susceptible to peer pressure and the want to win the game

  4. Kai Smith says:

    Dear, Ms. Johnson

    1) A violent shaking of the head causes a concussion, brain cells to become depolarized and fire all their neurotransmitters at once in a unhealthy cascade flooding the brain with chemicals and deaden certain receptors linked to learning and memory. This definition of a concussion is different because this definition gives you more details of what happens to the brain during a concussion.

    2) Long term effects of these injuries are more problems with memory, concentration, speech, impendiments, headaches and other neurological problems.

    3) I think in these contact sports programs they need more padding around there heads and they shouldn’t use their heads to tackle a player. Coaches need to push this rule of not using your head to tackle.

    4) Yes, we should be watching the players because if they get hit in the head area they are more likely to get brain damage without us knowing because we don’t watch them carefully and don’t know how badly those hits can be.

    5) I wouldn’t let my children play football or hockey because those are contact sport where you get hit in the head a lot.

    6) I wouldn’t reform football, hockey or lacrosse because they are all great sports and i just think we need to have a rule on where you can hit the person if you were to come in contact with him or tackling someone. Also I think they just need to improve the gear an equipment.

    7) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q82EcGWi8l0 This illustrates the danger of head injuries.

  5. lizdrizzle says:

    Hi ms.Johnson its lisette,
    1. A concussion a injury caused when the head either accelerates rapidly and then is stopped, or is spun rapidly. It floods the brain with chemicals and deadening certain receptors linked to learning and memory.
    2. Long term effects of these injuries are confusion, blurred vision, memory loss, nausea and, sometimes, unconsciousness.
3 .These stories illustrate that there needs to be more saftey and awarness in our contact sports programs, for example have trainers at the schools to evaluate the telltale signs of a concussion. I think players should also express how they feel because many of them hold what there feeling in and it leads to worse concussions.
    4. Even if football is dangerous to players, we should still watch it because its not our fault that there are athletes who like playing football, it is their choice and their lifestyle and it influneces america and sports fans.
5.Based on these two pieces, i would allow my own children to play contact sports if it is something they truly enjoy and love to do because i cant stop someone from doing something they have fun doing. I would just make sure they are well protected and are always getting checked on to see if anything is going wrong.
    6. I would not reform the way hockey, football, lacrosse and other contact sports are played, but i would reform the saftey gear and make the players say when they get hurt and constantly have them checked for any injuries internal and external.
    7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlYiDxNcMdc this video illustrates the impacts of head injuries.

  6. Hi Ms. Johnson,
    1. A concussion is an injury which generally occurs when the head either accelerates rapidly and then is stopped, or in spun rapidly. The violent shaking causes the brain cells to become depolarized and fire their neurotransmitters at once in an unhealthy cascade, flooding the brain with chemicals and deadening certain receptors linked to learning and memory. This definition differs from the one I’m familiar with because all I knew was that when you get a concussion everything is a blur and you cant think straight. This definition is more detailed than I thought it was.
    2. The long term effects of these injuries are memory, concentration, speech impediments, headaches and other neurological problems.
    3. These stories illustrate that they must be stricter on the way they play, if there is too much contact they need to call more fouls and penalties so the games can be played safer and less people would be getting injured.
    4. Yes we should still watch football players. They risk their lives and put themselves in danger when they’re out on the field so we might as well support them for doing what they love and not caring about their health. Also besides the injuries, watching football is very exciting it keeps viewers entertained.
    5. Based on these two pieces I would allow my children to play contact sports. First I will explain to them of course the consequences of playing these contact sports and if they truly understand and still want to play I would support them all the way without a doubt.
    6. I would reform these sports because honestly if there are a bunch of people getting injured and having long term effects because of concussions there should be a change in equipment, gear, and the way the game is played. We wouldn’t want the rate of deaths because of sports to become high.

  7. kirstenmendieta says:

    1. A concussion is a serious trembling that causes brain cells “depolarized”, which floods the brain with chemicals and deadening particular receptors that are linked to learning and memory. This definition differs from the definition I’m familiar with because I never knew that the shaking of the brain could release harmful chemicals. I always believed it was just a bruising of the brain.

    2. Long-term effects of these injuries include blurred vision, confusion, memory loss, nausea, and unconsciousness. Also, after a person suffers from a concussion, “he is as much as four times more likely to sustain a second one.”

    3. These stories illustrate that more safety precautions need to be taken in the contact sport programs. Having more rules and regulations towards safety equipment and more professional athletic trainers.

    4. Well although football is a dangerous sport, people enjoy watching the game. But by us watching it, we make it okay for the men to play. In the long run, we can’t stop people from playing the sport they enjoy, neither can we stop people from watching it.

    5. I would allow my kids to play contact sports. I cant keep my kids away from the world and activities, but I will make sure that they are wearing their safety equipment and I also wouldn’t allow them to play football or hockey, just because it‘s too dangerous.

    6. To reform contact sports I would make laws that dealt with them becoming more safer for the individuals that are playing. I would make more protective uniform and helmets and change up the rules of the game to make it less dangerous.

  8. Michelle Vasquez says:

    1. A concussion is a violent hit to the head that causes ones brain to slam against the skull beyond the ability of cerebrospinal fluid that normally would cushion such an impact.
This definition differs from one we’re familiar with because we usually think that concussions are physical swellings in the brain.
    2. the long term effects of these injuries are: confusion, blurry vision, memory loss, nausea and occasionally unconsciousness.
3.These stories illustrate that people should pay more attention to players safety in our contact sports programs.
    4. I dont think that people should stop watching football, i just think that people should pay more attention to safety. For some people, football is their life, some even make or try to make a career out f it. People love the game and the unity it bring to Americans.
    5. Based on these two pieces i would let my kid play contact sports programs because sports does impact a child’s life in a good way. But of course, after reading these articles, i will focuse more on safety and protection gear.
    6. I would not reform the way hockey, football, lacrosse or other contact sports are played but i would reform certain rules, protection gear, and make it comfortable for plays to st if peak out if their hurt or if they feel like something is not right.
    7. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=+dangers+of+head+Injuries this videos illustrates the impacts of head injuries

  9. Edwin Revis Caban says:

Hi Ms. Johnson its Edwin Caban.
    1) According to the New York Times definiton, it says that a concussion has nothing to do with brain swelling. It actually is when the head accelerates rapidly and is stopped abruptly causing the brain to rattle or spun rapidly also causing the brain to rattle. This definition is new to me because i simply thought it was from head to head collisions or a hard hit causing your head to hit the surface quickly and fiercely. I learned from the article that from the quick motion of the head causes your brain to rattle flooding the brain with chemicals of neurotransmitters.
    2) Long term effects of getting a concussion is problems with memory, concentration, speech impediments, headaches and other neurological issues. Another scary statistic is that a person who had previously had a concussion is 4 times more likely to get one with less of an impact.
    3) These stories tell us that the coaches and medical staff of teenage athletes should be more ontop of their players and should give players with head injuries immediate concussion tests to make sure they dont have a serious injury. Also the parents of athletes should always communicate with their children asking if they have any injuries and notify the coach to make sure they are watched carefully.
    4) Yes we should be watching it because it is one of the few sports that americans play and make America special. Its one of the most exciting sports to watch and plus if we were to stop watching what would all of those athletes do without their sport? There would be an immediate increase in crime because on sundays many people stay home and spend their day watching football so they would have nothing to do plus some of these athletes either played a sport they love or have nothing to do which could encourage a rise in illegal activity.
    5) I would most certainly allow my child to play any sport he desires and loves because in my opinion every child should be introduced to different physical activities to keep them healthy and keep them out of trouble. If kids werent allowed to play sports the amount of obesity in children would rise drastically and sports would be gone.
    6) I would implement more rules and penalties to athletes who cause an injury to another athlete like concussions to send a message that there wont be anymore helmet to helmet collisions or uneccessary roughness plays that could hurt players.
    7) This video briefly talks about an opinion about concussions and a certain athlete named sydney crosby who could have his career ended with a series of head injuries.

    • mjsevensins says:

Response is well thought out and the video is a good illustration about the negative impact some of the safety equipment has on not understanding that not feeling pain can be harmful!

  10. nickbotero says:

    1. Explain what a concussion is? How does this definition differ from one you are familiar with?
A concussion is an injury that occurs when the head is hit really hard or a traumatic injury to the brain and also when it accelerates rapidly then it suddenly stops. Concussions happen when an athlete usually falls gets hit or kicked hard. This causes the brain to become flooded with chemicals that weaken certain receptors that deal with memory and learning. This definition is very much different because i always knew what a concussion was and that it was a severe head injury.

    2. What are the long term effects of these injuries?
The long term effects on these injuries are confusion and memory loss.

    3. What do these stories illustrate need to be done in our contact sports programs?
These stories illustrate that there needs to be more safety rules in contact sport programs .Also that if theres too much contact fouls should be called so that players wont get hurt. I feel that there should be more protection for players .

    4. If football is so dangerous to players, should we be watching it? Explain your answer.
I agree football is a dangerous sport but players enjoy playing the sport they love and we enjoy watching them play and win because its such a joy. We should be watching it because were showing that team or that player our support .

    5. Based on these two pieces, would you allow your own children play contact sports? Skateboard, Bike Ride etc… Explain.
Yes as soon as my child could walk i would want my child to be into sports and play all types of contact sports .Its important for a child to join a sport because its a different atmosphere. I wouldn’t want my kid to be home all day and do nothing . I wouldn’t want him to be playing sports and i would be there by his side teaching him the ropes.

    6. How would you reform hockey, football, lacrosse and other contact sports?
I would reform all the safety issues from football , lacrosse and other contact sports because safety is a big issue especially in football hockey and lacrosse. I believe they should be more safety gear in these sports.

    7. Find a video that illustrates the dangers of head Injuries to share with the rest of the class – It can be an interview with a victim of head injury, it may be related to changes in safety equipment, a biological explanation of what occurs – Your choice

  11. Jason Efthimiou says:

Hey Ms. Johnson, this is Jason Efthimiou
    1. A concussion is when the brain is damaged from impact or shaking. The brain may be bruised or begin to bleed underneath the skull. I already knew the definition of a concussion.
    2. Increased difficulty concentrating/thinking, speech impairment, headaches, confusion, memory loss, other brain malfunctions/issues.
    3. This brings awareness that our contact sports need to have limitation and increased authority to help contain a safe playing environment.
    4. I don’t believe we should stop watching football simply because it’s dangerous. Everything has it’s risks, players just need to keep playing fair and wear proper equipment.
    5. Yes I would, mainly because I had the chance to play sports such as football, baseball, and basketball throughout my life, it’s only fair to allow the same to my own kids.
    6. I would make sure that all playing equipment is safe and reliable, and that the reff’s/authorities are doing a good job maintaining a safe playing environment.

    1) A concussion is when the head either accelerates rapidly and then is stopped, or is spun rapidly. People usually think a concussion is when you get hit really hard in the head and your brain bruises which leads to swelling or bleeding which is not the case.
    2) Long term affects of having concussion is that after a person suffers a concussion it is more likely that he suffers a second concussion. After having a series of concussions it takes less damage to the head to get a concussion. Depression and Alzheimer disease are also some long term affects with people who have suffered plenty concussions.
    3) These stories illustrate that contact sports such as football is dangerous and that something need to be done. Teenagers such as Ben Zipp, Zach Lystedt, and plenty other young high school football players have suffered so much after playing football with a concussion that they may never be the same again. There should be rules for such hard hits and if any coach realizes that any of their players are having concussion like symptoms they should be taken out of the game.
    4) Football is an interesting sport to watch but watching your favorite player receive constant blows to the head isn’t. Fans live to see the hard hits on a player and feel it makes the sport most interesting than it already, however their is nothing interesting about watching a person receive a concussion because the long term affects could be deadly, We should watch football for the right reasons and the NFL should make rules that ban such hard hits to the head from the game.
    5) I would allow my child to play contact sports because I would teach my child the consequences a contact sport can bring and to always speak out if they are having concussion like symptoms. I would not stop my child from playing the sport they love even if it is a contact sport, however they should know to never play with any type of injury and to have a full recovery until they play their certain sport after receiving an injury.
    6) I would reform all contact sports by making rules that ban somebody from playing with a concussion until they are medically cleared to play. I would have classes in school that teach players of contact sports the dangers a concussion can lead to. The most important thing I would reform about contact sports is to encourage all to speak out if they are having concussion symptoms because there is no fun in a game if a person life is in danger.

    3. The stories illustrate that our contact sports need to give the players more protection, specifically Football, or Hockey.
    4. yes we should watch football. This is because we can use the injuries sustained by players as examples for how to play safer.
5.I would allow my children to play contact sports. This is because I would not limit my child to learning and or enjoying the fun of contact sports.
6.I wouldnt reform the games. I would reform their protection on their gear.

    3. The stoies illustrate that the programs should have teasts for the football players because most dont know that they have a concussion or try to hide it.
    4. Yes, Football is dangerous to the players but we should watch it because it is a big part of our history living in america.

    1. A concussion is when your head moves rapidly and the stops or is also when your head is spun rapidly. As a result from the violent shaking, the brain cells become reduced and all their neurotransmitters are fired at the same time. This causes the brain to become flooded with chemicals that weaken certain receptors that deal with memory and learning. This definition of a concussion is different than the definition I thought it was , when you start to bleed internally in your brain and knock out for a certain amount of days.

    2. effects of concussions are memory loss, trouble with speech, bad concentration issues, headaches, nausea, and blurred vision.

    3. these stories illustrate that the uniforms or helmets need to be extra padding or comforter. they need to be more cautious and protective.

    4. well, although football is very dangerous, you cant stop people from doing what they love. if you don’t be careful and strain yourself , their will be long term consequences.

    5. of course i will allow my kids to play any contact sport they want to do. i won’t keep them away from what they love, i will make sure they have extra protection and gear though.

    6. i would reform better gear towards these contact sports , i wouldn’t stop these players from the sport they choose to tolerate.

    Hi Ms. Johnson, it’s Kemora.
    1. A concussion is when the head accelerates rapidly and then is stopped, or when the head spins rapidly. This definition differs from the one i am familiar with because it mentions no internal bleeding or bruise to the brain.
    2. The long term effects of concussions are memory loss, speech impediments, problems concentrating, headaches, etc.
    3. These stories illustrate to us that we need to know and realize the symptoms of a concussion and not ignore it because ignoring it can have a detrimental effect on our lives. These stories also tells us that the coaches should also be educated on the symptoms of a concussion so that they can prevent their players from doing more harm to themselves.
    4. Yes, i think we should be watching it. It is completely inevitable to avoid injuries in any contact sport. Football is very entertaining and people like playing it. Although their are higher risk to injuries in football, the players choose to play it and it is THEIR life, so they obviously know what they’re getting themselves into.
    5. Yes i would allow my own child to play contact sports, like i said it’s impossible to play a contact sport and not get injured. I believe contact sports are fun and create a competitiveness that will not only benefit my child during that sport, but in life in general that would allow them to succeed in life. Getting hurt is apart of everybody’s childhood and depriving he/she from playing contact sports is kind of selfish.
    6. I would reform hockey, lacrosse, football and other contact sports is by making sure that every school has a certified athletic trainer to help protect players during their games.

  17. SusanBukala says:

    1. A concussion is When the head moves rapidly to a sudden stop or is spun rapidly.
    2. Long term effects of a concussion include irritability, headaches, depression, sleep disorders, poor concentration, and trouble with memory.
    3. The stories from the article illustrate that what most people think is a minor head bump, could in reality be very serious and life threatening. If a player in a contact sport is hurt they should sit out and be checked by a doctor, they shouldn’t be allowed to play in the game until they have fully recovered.
    4. I don’t think there is anything wrong with watching a football game. A football team however should be fully protected, and if a player does get hit he should sit out, not continue to play in the game.
    5. I would allow my children to play contact sports, but with supervision and gear to protect them from serious injuries.
    6. If i were to reform contact sports i would have a doctor on site, and the coach has to sit a player out if they appear to have hit hard.
    7. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=8386994

  18. 1. A concussion is when the head either accelerates rapidly and then is stopped, or is spun rapidly. This definition differs from the one i am familiar with because i thought a concussion was a bruise to the brain caused by getting hit very hard on that part.
    2. The long term effects of these injuries are confusion, blurred vision, memory loss, nausea and sometimes unconsciousness.
    3. In our contact sports programs , the sports players should speak up and say how they are feeling because it can cause a problem to them in the end when they don’t speak up. The coaches should make sure their players are always safe to play before letting them out on the field.
    4. I think we should still watch football because even though the sport is very dangerous, the players know what they sign up to, and what they work hard for and its all for the love of the sport.
    5. I think i would allow my child at first to play contact sports only if they know they love it and its something they want to do. I always would want my child in some physical sport and if my child so happens to choose football or any other contact sport then so be it, but i will make sure they know what they are getting into by informing them.
    6. i would reform contact sports probably by changing the rules of the games and not making them so leisure but more strict. I also probably would make the person who caused the head injury pay a fine , and make sure the players have SAFER and more secure gear .

  19. Hello Ms. Johnson, its Celeste DeNisco

    1. I thought a concussion was just a hard blow to the head or collision, but its much more they can be traumatic head injuries or both mild and severe blows to the head. A concussion is when the head either accelerates rapidly and then is stopped, or is spun rapidly.
    2. Long term affects are loss of memory, Blurred vision, nausea, frequent headaches, and limited concentration, & sometimes, unconsciousness.
    3. The stories illustrate that our contact sports need to provide the players with more protection.

    4. No, I believe that football as entertaining as the sport is to us fans shouldn’t be watched. The reason why I believe this is because they are risking their lives everyday and can get very hurt in the long run. We are actually watching as they brutally hurt one another.

5.I would allow my children to play contact sports, reason why I would do this is because im a fan of sport and believe it keeps you occupied.
    6. I wouldn’t really reform it. I would just add as much more protection as you can.

You are the first one to say people should not watch sports that put its players at risk

The video broke my heart as a mom and I am glad you chose it – It is one we should probably suggest all students should watch
      Thank you!

  20. Hello Ms. Johnson!

    Article on “Head Injuries”:

    1) A concussion occurs when the head either accelerates rapidly and then is stopped, or is spun rapidly.
This definition is differ from the one I’m familiar with.. A concussion is an injury to the brain or spinal cord that may come back permanently or can easily go away.
    2) The long term effects of these injuries are: confusion, blurred vision, memory loss, nausea and, sometimes, unconsciousness.

    Article on “High School Sports the Dangers of Concussion”;

    3) These stories illustrate that athletic associations and athletic directors need to be done in our contact sports programs.
    4) If football is so dangerous to players, we shouldn’t be watching it because people who encourage football players to play.. don’t realize that their lives can be at risk. Like matt Peterson, Woodinville says, “This is your life you’re dealing with. This is more than just a game.”
    5) Based on these two pieces, I would allow my own children to play contact sports because if you desire and have a passion for the sport you love than you can do it. Also, it is well exercise and manage your potential towards sports. But I believe having a professional athletic director is best for the safety of my children.
    6) I would reform hockey, football, lacrosse and other contact sports to have caution in your friend, family, or children’s safety because it is accurate that brain damage may occur with serious circumstances. Players don’t understand or realize that risking your life in playing a sport can bring damage to your health or even death.

1.A concussion is when your brain cells are depolarized and your brain fires off as many signals as it can which causes your brain to be flooded with chemicals. This definition is more depth than what I was already aware of.

2.After you’ve had one concussion you’re four times more likely to receive another one.

    3. There should be more mandatory check-ups during the season as well as special check-ups for people with symptoms of concussions.

    4. Even though football is so dangerous people do dozens of dangerous things everyday so since we’re always in some sort of danger why shouldn’t we indulge in an activity that takes our minds off things.

5.So long as they’re’s a helmet involved and they don’t do anything too crazy contact sports aren’t
    quite that dangerous

6.Mandatory physicals both preseason and multiple times during the season.

  22. Armando Perez says:

    1. A concussion is when your head is spun or accelerated rapidly and is not caused by hitting a hard surface. This violent shaking causes the brain cells to become depolarized. The brain is then flooded with chemicals and deadening certain receptors linked to learning and memory. I used to think a concussion would only come from a hard hit to the head.
    2. The long terms effects concussions are confusion, blurred vision, memory loss, nausea and, sometimes, unconsciousness.
    3. These stories illustrate that we need to be safer when playing any contact sport. We should always try to avoid getting hit in our head or using our head for something we know can hurt us.
    4. We all know football is dangerous but we see it as something interesting and entertaining. We know someone can get hurt but if it’s there for us to watch why shouldn’t we.
    5. I would let my kid play contact sports if he really likes it. If my kid likes to play soccer or football then I’m not going to stop him but I will try my best to prevent him from getting seriously injured.
    6. The only thing I would reform in hockey, football, and lacrosse is better equipment to protect the players.

Good overview but a little callous when it comes to watching sports where someone can get injured
Considering your last blog post – the music video be careful you do not become too desensitized to violence and its impact

  23. 1) A concussion is a head injury that cause the brain to become depolarized and to fire all of their nuerotransmitters at once in an unhealthy manor flooding the brain with chemicals. I used to think that concussion was when you got hit in the head and had a headache or forgetting things.

    2) Long term effects of a concussion can lead to depression, memory loss, and early onset of dementia.

    3) It illustrates that there needs to be a trained physician at games , and also if you are an athlete and you think you may have a concussion just sit out . every athlete wants to play even when they are injured but with head injuries you can be doing some serious damage that can effect you in the long term

    4) Football is a dangerous sport , But I will not stop watching or even playing the game. Yes it is dangerous but I don’t see a reason to not watch it , there are a lot more things that are more dangerous than football but people watch and do all the time.

    5) I would allow my kids to play a contact sports, as long as the game is being taught the right way , I would not hide my kids from a contact sport.

    6) I really would not know about making reforms in lacross and hockey because I dont watch it , but in football a good change would be that all players should strap there chinstraps tight because some players do not strap them and thats why you see a lot of helmets coming off at times so that would be a change I would make.

FYI – VIDEOS WERE VERY INTERESTING – THANK YOU

      WHERE IS YOUR OTHER ASSIGNMENT?

  24. karinadowd says:

    Hey Ms.Johnson its Karina Dowd

1.A concussion is an injury to the brain or spinal cord due to a blow or fall. The Brain violently shaking or jarring.
    2. People experience memory loss , unable to concentrate , speech impairment and headaches,
    3. The article illustrate the concussion people have encountered with and all the signs of one.
    4. Even thought football is dangerous, the players are going at their own risk and know the outcomes if they do participate.
    5. If my child want to be in a contact sport id allow it , i cannot stop my child from having fun , but they have to have protection.Trying to avoid a concussion or an injury as possible.
6.IF i was to reform contact sports,i would : make sure that everyone has the right protection and tell all the players to notify the coach if any injury occurred while playing immaterially.

    3) These stories illistrate that there need to be more check ups with contact sports that players and gear needs to be check every season little bit more attention
    4) Football is a very dangerous sport but if it was dangerous we wouldnt be watching or encourging kids to play it in society
    5) I would let my children play the sports but be more cautious and responsible and inform my children about the warness .
    6) I would reform every contact sport into letting children about the sport that their intresed in and their parents, also the gear using to play these sports.

  26. daniaidette says:

    1. A concussion is a hard blow to the head in which there in no bleeding that can be seen in scans but instead the brain is moving rapidly. This changes the definition of a cuncussion because I though the person would bleed in their brain.
    2. Long term effect with having a concussion result in confusion, blurred vision, memory loss, and uncosciousness.
    3. These stories illustrate that the coaches should be more observate of their team. Also that theyh should hire a professional trainer because they have a better ability to determine if the player should play or not.
    4. Although football is a dangerous sport, football is amusing and interesting for people to watch and the players love the game.
    5. It would depend on exactly what sport it is, as a potentional parent i can’t restrict my child from doing something they like but to enforce them the dangers and to protect themselves as much as possible.
    6. The way I would probably reform hockey, football, lacrose and other contact sports would be the amount of contact and have more cushion of the helmets to protect the brain.

1.A concussion is when your head moves rapidly and then is stopped. They can have both long term and short term effects. It also floods your brain with chemicals which is harmful.
2.The long term effect of having a concussion is having confusion, memory loss and blurred vision.
3.These stories illustrate that their should be more check ups and if players arnt feeling good they should sit out instead of going back into the game.
4.Even though football is a dangerous sport we should still watch it. People will play it no matter what.
    5. Based on these two stories I would still let my children play contact sports. I think its good for children to play sports.
6.I would put more cushion in the gear so it would be safer.

Michael – I am not sure you understood the repercussions of a traumatic brain injury and the video you sent me to look at comes from the site I used – You needed to find one on your own

  28. John Shand says:

    1. A concussion happens when the head either accelerates rapidly and then is stopped, or is spun rapidly. Due to harsh movement, the brain cells become depolarized and release all the neurotransmitters at once. This causes the brain to flood with chemicals, damaging certain receptors that affect learning and memory. I thought a concussion was simply a bruise on the brain.

    2. Some long term effects of a concussion are blurred vision, confusion, and memory loss.
    3. These stories illustrate that the players and parents should be warned of the dangers from playing a competitive sport, as well as, hiding severe symptoms that can lead to death. Also to encourage teams to use certified athletic trainers.
    4. Not necessarily, many things can be done to prevent or lessen the life-threatening injuries. A player should be fully examined frequently, especially before important games. The players determination for the game leads them to ignore their symptoms, but having an athletic trainer would prevent them from stepping on the field until they are fully recovered.
    5. Yes, I wouldn’t deprive my child from his enjoyment of playing sports because of my fear of the possible injuries that can occur. Sports keeps children active and in shape, as well as, motivated. With the right safety precautions, I can lessen the possibility of my child having a severe injury.
    6. I would reform contact sports by encouraging schools to put in more money into the sports department so they can have the right equipment and proper training to learn a sport safely. Fundraiser and bake sales can always be held by individual teams to raise more money for whatever is needed.

    1. A concussion is a hit to the head which causes your head to spins rapidly. this definition differs from the one i had because i though that a concussion could cause your brain to losses all of your memory from your past.

    2. Long term affect of these injuries are memory lose short and long term, blurry vision, and headaches.

    3. These stories illustrate that a coaches should not put a player back into a game after he got hit in the head. they should have a doctor approval and a player should not risk his or her life for one game.

    4. Even though football is a dangerous sport we should still watch it because it is entertaining and players dont get hurt on purpose most head to head hits are not on purpose.

    5. Yes i would allow my kids to play contacts sports because it is good for them and they could learn that you need to work together and working together could help them in the future.

    6. I would add more protection gear and add more rules.

    3) these stories illiustrate the need of more caution in contact sports and that players should have check ups and not force themselves during a game
    4) Yes we should. All sports have a general danger. People will continue to play
    5) Yes i would. I would caution them to be careful
    6) Im not sure how. Maybe as technology continues there will ber a solution

  31. Dylan Scigliano says:

    1. A concussion is injury to the brain or spinal cord due to jarring from a blow, fall, or the like

    2. Listen to Mohamed Ali speak, it can affect your ability to speak and it can cause you to lose memory.

    3. These stories illistrate that there has to be more caution in contact sports. Yo really have to be kidding me. A contact sport is created well now lets all look at common sense we should provide these athletes with the safest gear possible.

    4. First of all children should barely watch sports….GO PLAY IT IF YOU REALLY ENJOY THE SPORT. These children are sitting there asking themselves why they cant be the next Joe Namouth. Well I got news for you, THEY CAN. Forget about watching football go buy a football and play it. Stop sitting in front of your plasma flat screen and go play it rather than sitting there eating yourself to death watching men in tights running around and grabbing eachother.

    5. The only reason why I wouldn’t allow my kid to play a contact sport is because the people who work for the contact sports dont provide the safest equiptment. I am waiting for one of these selfish low lives to turn around and say ” I have a significant amount of money, let me attempt to design a helmet in which if hit hard enough the player cannot possibly get a concussion.”

    6. There is no possible way to reform any sport. The sports industry is controlled by people who are concerned with one thing and one thing only, THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR. They will do anything they possible can to keep the sports industry running. If there was any possibility, I would try my best to explain all the horrible things that can happen to people when playing these sports.
